Ahead of your move, it’s helpful to understand common moving industry terminology. When you’re hiring a moving company, you’ll need to make sure they handle the type of move you need, whether it’s local, long distance, intrastate, or interstate. These moves usually have different rates and may be governed by different federal and state agencies.
At Move 4 Less, we consider a long distance move to be anything outside a 200-mile radius of your origin or outside Colorado, regardless of distance.

Colorado moving companies are regulated by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC). Intrastate movers operating in the state must have a Colorado PUC permit. A US DOT number is required for interstate moves or relocation across state lines. This number is assigned by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
Denver moving companies are also required to carry minimum insurance coverage:
If the mover isn’t licensed or insured, you won’t have protection if your belongings are damaged or lost. You can verify the company’s standing and check their safety record using their CO PUC and US DOT numbers.
Look for a moving company that uses a robust screening process and trains its movers rather than using inexperienced or temporary crews. The moving team that shows up for the job should be background checked and uniformed for your protection. They should receive training in the correct methods and equipment to reduce the risk of damage to your home or belongings while packing, moving, loading, and unloading.
Ideally, you want movers who have years of experience in the industry. This experience matters when it comes to estimating costs and delivery dates, avoiding common hurdles, and planning the logistics of a more complicated relocation.
It takes years to develop the expertise to ensure a seamless relocation without unpleasant surprises. With experience and training also comes the knowledge of the right equipment and techniques to safely handle all types of household goods, including fragile and oversized items that are easily damaged by inexperienced crews.
Beware of any mover who isn’t upfront about their pricing or fails to provide a written estimate. Colorado movers are required to give a written estimate at least 24 hours before your scheduled move unless you are booking same-day services. You cannot be charged more than 110% of the estimate.
Your moving contract must have an itemized breakdown and description of all costs and rates for transportation and other services you will receive.
Movers must also accept at least two forms of payment. It’s a red flag if the company only accepts cash or requires you to put down a large upfront deposit.
